Necessity of Farming/Money - Guild Wars Forums

Guild Wars is my first MMO, and I am still new to it. My question is, why do people "farm" all day instead of just playing for fun? I just don't understand what you could need all that money for. Right now I am a level 16 on my first character and I have enough money and supplies to get 70 armor. Now, I know that weapons cost a lot at higher levels, but I just can't see how you could justify farming all day instead of playing. Thanks for any insight.

People farm to buy weapon skins that are more desirable/rare. Or for armor that cost more.

You should note: the stats on these items are not what people farm for. It's all a looks thing.

Well, a lot of people don't find farming THAT boring. Most enjoy the challenge to do it better and faster.

But ofcourse if you only farm all day long, then yes it will be boring even to them. And the ones farming all day just enjoy getting the most expensive weapons..

Ohh ok. So people do it to get "prestige" armor, even though it is no better than the other 70 armor? Or something along those lines.

Which leads me to my next question, what do you do after you've reached level 20 and done all the missions? Is that when farming becomes more of something to do, than for the money?

You won't be finished with the game by the time you're 20 level more than likely. There are always quests to do along the way too. Then the other games. Then PvP, etc, etc, etc.

After you get to 20lv, you need to adept to enemies. When you finish game, you can do many things such as:

1. Do bonuses on all missions.
2. Do hard mode all missions.
3. Play game and do quests, enjoy, find new places.
4. Play with guild - im in guild that mostly farm and trust me, tho i find some areas funny to farm, im mostly solo or with friends from previous guilds doing something hard mode or normal mode.

Difference between armor that cost 500 000k and 15 000k is just look. Like weapons. Some people like to buy weapons and pay a lot just because of the look. While some spend more on items because of their attributes (requirement 7 or 8 instead of 9) so they can adept it to builds.

I find farming amusement just some areas (like MNTS in uw etc.) because it`s fun to try to do your best work, though I would not have problem if some of most popular farms get nerfed. I do most so I could get some things I wanted (bought enough alcohol to maximize my alcohol title from start to end [yeah, i got serious problems with booze

]) such as armour and weapon. Now I have acquire that, and I mostly don`t farm anymore, only with guildies or people i know so its more fun

My advice, if you find pve guild where you feel welcome, you will enjoy one of best moments of this game

For people who have completed all story lines with multiple characters, and aren't interested in PvP, the only thing left is farming for titles, farming for money, or find something else that is enjoyable.

Personally, I just like having lots of money. Its not even about flaunting, its just knowing when there is something I want, I have the option to buy. On that note, there are alot of difficult to acquire items that mean your better off farming for the money to buy one than farming for that item itself.

As has often been stated, getting to level 20 is really just a tutorial. There's so much to do after that: hard mode, equipping heroes, experimenting with different builds, challenge missions, elite areas, guild activities, etc. You're right, you can get all the max weapons and armor simply by playing through the game. Most of the money is just spent on statistically-equivalent prestige versions of stuff and mini-pets.

There are also certain hobbies and play-styles that you do need money for. For example, I like to try all the dungeons in hard mode with only heroes and henchmen. For that to even be possible (at least for me, since I don't enjoy gimmick solo builds), I need to buy a steady supply of "death penalty removal" items. I also like to buy lots of lockpicks to open all the chests and lots of perfect salvage kits to move the mods around on my weapons. I like playing Barbie with my heroes too, getting them all good weapons and armor components.

When I get lucky and find a sought-after weapon or other item, sometimes I keep it if I'm in the mood, and otherwise I sell it. Over time I've just found the right balance of keeping and selling so that I break even.

If you spend much time on these forums, you'll see plenty of posts about how "it's all about farming" or "it's all about running." Baloney... I do neither of those things and have a great time, and I even get plenty of prestige weapons for myself to boot

2) There is something specific you want, and farming is the best option to get it
3) You don't PvP and have nothing else to do
4) Your goal isn't to play the game, but to have more money than other people

Not sure what else people would use as a reason to farm, but those are the ones I know of. I only farm for specific things like the items for Nicholas or materials for armor/cons. As you noted, you don't need much money, and playing normally will get you what you need. After that, it is simply a matter of personal preferences on things like looks or titles. Even titles require no farming if you know how to max them through playing the game.

I still haven't figured out why people feel a need to farm 80% of the time they play. And I do know people who are like that. Asking them about it gets me no answers, so I stopped asking.

I farmed until i was interested in titles, then i got bored and stopped. Now i'm learning PvP, and i farm only to get the occasional armor or collector weapon for my PvE chars.

You can easily make enough gold and have fancy things just by playing. Only difference is with farming you can get more faster. It isn't needed, but some people prefer farming over quests they've never done, helping others, chatting, vanquishing, trying out new builds, and other neat things.

people farm for various reasons - and I think there is an evolution to farming that just occurs first out of necessity, then exploration of interest, then for material gain to acquire "unnecessary" costly items (or indirectly to doing so, such as farming feathers to make backups to sell for money to buy said costly items, etc.), culminating in farming out of boredom. Eventually, if you are have the addict-prone behavior type, you will farm just because there is nothing else to do. This is based on my own experience. After attaining GWAMM (r6 titles - 30+ maxed titles), filling my Hall of Monuments (HoM), buying the "leet" weapons I wanted, and obtaining FOW armor and all the other elite sets I wanted, it comes back to just farming for the fun of playing. I thought I could quit after achieving all the goals I set for myself once I realized what they were, I'm finding it hard to quit this god-forsaken game, lol. So now, I create new toons to relive the starting fresh experience and get them to the level necessary to try new farms, latest one being my rit. I guess my main advice to you as a new player would be to stay mindful of the time spent playing this game and just keep it at a level of fun only - when it starts to become a grind to you, don't fall into the trap of trying attain that next level, this game will take over your life if you let it

The word farmin could also refer to title farming, which in some cases is just for HoM. As said farming is for getting fancy looking stuff, not actually worthy(as in power).
